The basic Garmin handheld is the eTrex series.

Thanks for your tips--very helpful! I am going to attempt to start geocaching tomorrow with my 16 month-old who LOVES the outdoors. Hoping this will be a fun (and nearly FREE!) hobby for us to begin together.
